Backpack Buddies Program
With the help of CISFC and the Walnut Cove Backpack Buddies Advisory Board the Backpack Buddies
program has arrived in Stokes County and will serve students attending Walnut Cove Elementary School.
Backpack Buddies is a need based program designed to provide students with nutritious meals outside of
the lunch room and extended into the weekend, and therefore helps to eliminate hunger.
Research has found that malnourished children are more likely to have poorer mental health, be withdrawn or
socially disruptive, and suffer greater rates of behavioral disorders. Hungry children also show higher levels of
aggression, hyperactivity, and anxiety.
Implementing this program will hope to increase student's ability to become more attentive in the classroom,
increase productivity and a positive classroom dynamic.
A lot of times families depend on school to make sure their children receive meals. When the weekend comes
some children go hungry or do not get as much food as they need. The community's ultimate goal us to make sure
each child is fed happy and ready to learn!
